Exploring the Why for a better future

Positive Behaviour Support specialists explore the reasons behind challenging behaviours to enhance an individual’s daily life and relationships.

We work with you

So you can live your best life

What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support, sometimes called Specialist Behaviour Support involves helping the people around you to understand your challenging behaviours and their triggers so they can work with you to build strategies that improve everyday life and wellbeing.

Positive behaviour support helps people:

  • understand your behaviour.
  • meet your needs.
  • provide the right support to you.

How Can Positive Behaviour Support Help You?

Positive behaviour support helps you to:

  • Feel understood so you get the support that meets your needs.
  • Have more choice and control in your life as those needs are communicated to your carers.
  • Take part in your community more.
  • Get along with other people.
  • Learn new skills and ways to cope.
  • Be safe.

How does Positive Behaviour Support work?

Positive behaviour support focuses on modifying your environment and developing your skills to:

  • Enhance your quality of life and living environment.
  • Decrease the chances of challenging behaviours.
  • Minimise and eventually eliminate the use of restrictive practices. Restrictive practises are there to keep you safe and to stop or change behaviour – For example, using a helmet if you are hitting your head or locking away sharp things, like  knives.

Your Behaviour Support Practitioner will:

  • Meet with you and your family or carer to determine and better understand your needs.
  • Identify your strengths.
  • Write a behaviour support plan with you and your family or carer.
  • Help other people use the plan.
  • Check that the plan is working.
  • Provide training on the plan to your engaged supports.

What type of behaviour support plan do I need?

There are 2 types of behaviour support plans:

  1. Interim Behaviour Support Plan – which focuses on keeping everyone safe in the short term.
  2. Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan – which delves into why your behaviour happens and how others can meet your needs.

6 Steps to your

Positive Behaviour Plan

Step 1

Establishing your positive behaviour support team - We begin by identifying the key people in your life. This team may include family, friends, educators, and therapists. Team members work together to develop, implement, and monitor your support plan.

Step 2

Data Collection we will conduct observations in your environments to collect data about how you communicate, your strengths and important elements of your life. This helps us to work alongside you

Step 3

Interim Behaviour Support Plan we will develop this interim behaviour support plan within 6 weeks of service if we identify safety concerns that put you or people around you at risk of harm. This is an interim response addressing safety concerns. We use this to determine the next steps in your positive behaviour support journey.

Step 4

Functional Behaviour Assessment we use the data we have collected to determine the function or purpose of the challenging behaviour. We can then develop strategies and interventions to address or support the challenging behaviour and set goals to monitor the outcomes.

Step 5

Behaviour Support Plan Development we will develop a comprehensive behaviour support plan. This is a holistic document that includes assessments we have completed, such as functional behaviour. It will help improve your quality of life by supporting your progress and addressing underlying functions of the behaviours of concerns and identifying functionally equivalent replacement behaviours. This plan also identifies if, when, and how any regulated restrictive practices are to be implemented and will include fade out strategies to promote the reduction of them over time.

Step 6

Monitoring Success - we will provide training to your family and engaged supports in the strategies and interventions outlined in the plan. We will also monitor the effectiveness and implementation of the plan by completing regular check ins and observations.
