Every May, Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Prevention Month urges us to take a stand—to raise awareness, support survivors, and act to prevent violence before it starts. Across Australia, individuals, families, and organisations unite with one message: there is no place for violence in our homes or communities.
Domestic and family violence doesn’t discriminate. It affects people across all ages, cultures, and backgrounds—but it doesn’t have to define their future. At Centacare South West NSW, we’re committed to providing compassionate, culturally-aware, and practical support for all families experiencing DFV.
Remembering Those We’ve Lost – Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil
On Wednesday, May 7, we pause to honour the lives lost to domestic and family violence during the Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil. Each candle lit represents a life that should still be with us—and a call to action for all of us to do more.

Culturally Safe Support for Women and Children
We also recognise that women and family members from multicultural backgrounds face additional barriers in accessing support. Language, immigration concerns, and fear of judgement can all delay help-seeking.
Centacare’s Multicultural Family and Domestic Violence Support Service is here to bridge that gap. We work with women and children from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds to provide:
- Case management tailored to cultural needs
- Community engagement that fosters connection and support
- Building safe networks of care and understanding
- Education and training to build confidence and independence
Our goal is simple: to empower mothers and their children with trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive support. We stand alongside them every step of the way.

Taking Action – How to get involved
Preventing domestic and family violence isn’t just about services—it’s about community. It starts with us. Here’s how you can get involved:
- Attend the Vigil on May 7 and bring awareness to your workplace or community – safesteps.org.au/candlelight-vigil
- Challenge disrespectful attitudes and speak up against abusive behaviour.
- Start conversations around healthy relationships and consent.
Volunteer or donate to local DV support organisations like 1800 RESPECT visit: 1800respect.org.au/violence-and-abuse
- Share resources and stories that help others find the strength to seek help.
We all have a role to play—whether it’s offering support, creating safer spaces, or helping others find their voice.
We’re Here for You
