World Autism Awareness Day – April 2

Breaking Myths, Embracing Strengths, Building Inclusion

World Autism Awareness Day is designed to change perceptions and dispel myths about autism in order to create a more inclusive Australia. Every year on April 2, this international observance invites people across the globe to raise awareness, increase acceptance, and celebrate the unique strengths of individuals on the autism spectrum.

2025 Theme

The 2025 theme, Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focuses on the link between neurodiversity and global sustainability. It aims to promote inclusive policies that support autistic individuals while contributing to broader goals like equality, education, employment, and accessible cities. The overarching goal is to eliminate barriers, promote acceptance, and recognise the value neurodivergent people bring to creating a more inclusive and sustainable world.

Why Awareness Matters

One of the key goals of this day is to change outdated narratives. Too often, autism is misunderstood or reduced to a stereotype. By raising awareness, we help reduce stigma, encourage early intervention, and ensure more inclusive environments—in schools, workplaces, and everyday life.

How You Can Get Involved

There are many ways to honour World Autism Awareness Day:

  • Light It Up Blue – Join the global movement by wearing blue or lighting your home, office, or community space in blue to show your support.
  • Educate Yourself – Share accurate information, attend events, and read real-life experiences of people on the spectrum. For events near you, visit: autismawareness.com.au or watch the ION World Autism Awareness Day Broadcast 2025 [register online here]
