National Families Week, May 12-18

Celebrating Stronger Families & Supportive Communities

From 12–18 May 2025, Australians across the country will celebrate National Families Week, an annual opportunity to recognise the vital role families play in shaping strong individuals and resilient communities.

This Year’s Theme: Lending a Hand to Thrive: Supporting Each Other

In 2025, we’re shining a light on the simple yet powerful idea that when families support each other, everyone thrives. Support can look different for everyone—whether it’s:

  • Reaching out to a single parent who needs a break
  • Helping an elderly relative stay connected
  • Encouraging children to express their feelings
  • Checking in with friends going through a tough time

Strong families build stronger communities. When we offer each other a hand, we help create safe, connected environments where everyone feels they belong.

Reflect on the power of connection, compassion, and community

Whether you’re a parent, carer, friend, or neighbour, you can play a part in helping families flourish—because support isn’t always grand gestures; it’s often found in the everyday moments of care and kindness.

What is National Families Week?

National Families Week is a beloved annual initiative by Families Australia, supported by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. It coincides with the United Nations International Day of Families on 15 May and is celebrated by thousands of individuals, schools, councils, workplaces, and organisations.

The week provides a platform to celebrate all family types, acknowledge the challenges families may face, and promote the importance of nurturing and teaching the next generation.
